Kathy Bates could be the new queen of network television despite her promise to retire from acting.
The 76-year-old actress has said her latest project, Matlock, would be her “last dance”.
However, she agreed to stay at the party a little longer and shared good news with her castmates in a conference call Tuesday, telling them, “We’ve been picked for season two.”
Co-stars Skye P. Marshall, Jason Ritter, Leah Lewis and David Del Rio were on Zoom along with show creator Jennie Snyder Urman and executive producer Eric Christian Olsen when the Oscar winner broke the news.
The series, loosely based on the legal drama of the same name that starred the late Andy Griffith from 1986 to 1995, was renewed just two episodes into its first season.

Bates then thanked show creator Jennie Snyder Urman for allowing her to be the one to break the good news.
A statement from CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach explained why the show was renewed so quickly.
“This re-conceived ‘Matlock’ was dreamed up by Jennie Snyder Urman with a brilliant surprise plot twist, and we knew we had something very special the moment we saw the first episode brought to life by the incredibly talented Kathy Bates,” said the executive.
‘Public reception and critical praise have been overwhelming. We are looking forward to starting a second season.”
