A woman who suffered serious injuries after being allegedly attacked by her ex-partner in a “serious act of domestic violence” has died.

The 36-year-old woman lost her fight for life on Monday night, 11 days after the alleged incident in a public place in Katherine, in the Northern Territory’s outback.

The woman was rushed to Katherine Hospital in critical condition five days after the alleged attack on July 11.

Two days later she was transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital, where she spent six days in a coma in intensive care before dying from her injuries.

A 45-year-old man was arrested last Friday and charged with recklessly endangering life, attempting to cause serious harm and causing any damage.

The extent of the woman’s injuries before she died remains unclear.

Police had previously revealed that the woman had claimed she had been hit in the head.

Major crimes detectives are working with the Department of Public Prosecutions as police continue to investigate the incident.

Detective Sergeant Jon Beer said the investigation into the alleged attack that led to the woman’s hospitalisation was “complex”.

Police believe the alleged incident is an act of domestic violence.

“We have already spoken to a large number of people but we continue to urge anyone with information to contact police,” said Sgt Beer.

‘Police are particularly interested in CCTV and dashboard cameras from Railway Terrace between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on 11 July.’

Police do not believe a weapon was involved.

The man remains in custody and will appear in Darwin Local Court next week.
