Sitting on a bench in Windsor, surrounded by spring flowers, the Princess of Wales took the extraordinary step of revealing to the world that she has cancer in March.

Just five months ago, the Princess of Wales announced to the world that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing “preventive” chemotherapy.

“I am doing well and I am getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; my mind, body and spirit,” she said at the time, in a highly emotional and unprecedented video message.

This followed the major abdominal surgery Kate had in January, where she spent two weeks at the London Clinic in Marylebone.

Her absence from the public eye fuelled a social media storm and a host of unfounded conspiracy theories, ultimately leading the future Queen to address the nation in her deeply personal and candid clip.

It was not known when the Princess would return to public duties until it was announced that she would take her place on the Buckingham Palace Balcony alongside her family for the Standard Parade in June.

But she has dazzled supporters with her presence and outspokenness as she makes a slow but steady return to public life in recent months.

Kate, 42, joined the Royal Family to celebrate the King’s official birthday in June.

The Princess of Wales smiled and waved as she accompanied her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, in a carriage procession to the ceremony.

Her appearance had been in doubt after she missed the final Trooping rehearsal the weekend before the celebrations, and confirmation she would attend only came at 6pm the night before.

The world watched as she stepped out in a chic monochrome Jenny Packham dress that featured a statement bow, Eliza Doolittle-style.

It was an emotional moment between the Princess and King Charles as they met on the balcony of the Palace for the first time since they both began cancer treatment.

In a sweet gesture from the monarch, Kate stood next to Charles, a change from last year’s arrangement, when her husband, Prince William, was at her side.

Kate is believed to have grown closer to Charles, with the King announcing he was “very proud of Catherine for her bravery in speaking out as she did” in a statement after revealing her cancer diagnosis.

In her second public appearance, the mother of three attended Wimbledon alongside her daughter, Princess Charlotte, and her sister, Pippa Middleton.

She was greeted with a standing ovation when she made her way to the Royal Box during the tennis tournament in July.
