In an interview with the Radio times, she admitted that playing the eponymous lead character negatively impacted her emotional well-being and forced her to “invent trauma” in order to portray her properly.
Kate confessed that she struggled to shake off Mare’s inner turmoil and fraught family life, even after she finished filming in the United States and returned to her home in Sussex.
‘It is a process that I am going through. It will be gone soon. I’ve been her for a year and a half now, right? You can’t just turn it off.

‘I had to make up more trauma for myself to play this role than any character I’ve ever played.
‘I mean look at me. It’s utterly, utterly stupid, ‘Kate told the publication with tears dripping down her cheeks.
According to the award-winning actress, it was not the brooding mystery and crime that underpinned the drama that struck her, but rather Mare’s tense relationship with her troubled son who is not at home.
She continued: “There is clearly something in me that is tied to guilt.
‘As a mother you feel for certain things. And you know, not that as a mother I have huge things to feel particularly guilty about myself, but as mothers we can always do better.

Kate confirmed that there were many negative underlying themes affecting her character, Mare, that she identified with, even if they were not present in her own family.
She continued: ‘Today when I think about kids – I mean, happy, fortunately, I don’t have this with my kids – but the number of kids who hurt themselves, the number of kids with mental health issues, how it’s even hard to keep up what happens to young people when they spend much of their lives online …
‘I really noticed how relevant many of the underlying themes in Mare really felt to me.’
