Burton began her career at fashion designer Alexander McQueen’s eponymous label in 1997 and worked her way up.
She became creative director in February 2010 following McQueen’s death.
In addition to royalty, singer Lady Gaga and actress Cate Blanchett are also fans of Burton’s designs.
She said: “It is a great honour to join the beautiful house of Givenchy, it is a gem. I am very excited to be able to write the next chapter in the history of this iconic house and bring to Givenchy my own vision, sensibility and beliefs.”
Givenchy, known for its luxury handbags and perfumes, has been part of the £256bn LVMH empire since 1988. Burton’s first show is scheduled for March next year.
