‘In this particular case I have felt very sorry for myself, I’m afraid, because it is something very personal.
‘Other people, when he was here, talked so much about family, friends, all that, whereas this day is particularly special for him and me.
‘The fact that he is not here makes me feel very sad and I feel his absence like a train roaring, roaring.
“I’ve been grieving like everyone says you should, and I’ve been rereading some of your lovely anniversary messages on cards before, and I feel so grateful to have had that kind of romance and love in my life. I’m so lucky.”
On Thursday morning, Kate returned to host Good Morning Britain and spoke about her win.
She said the documentary was: ‘A total tribute to Derek, it was his story, and to the production company who made it so beautifully for him and all the carers really.
‘I’m glad (Susanna) said it was such a nice speech because it was such an out-of-body experience that I walked off the stage and said, “Did what I said make sense?”
“Because it’s a very strange time and the kids were lovely, so thank you.”
Kate concluded: “It’s for the carers, it’s for the vulnerable people who need care and for the people who do the caring, the brilliant professional carers.”
