A source close to the production has confirmed to IGN that Karl Urban is in final talks to play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. The news first broke out via Twitter. The Wrap.
For his part, Urban is no stranger to mega-chains. He currently stars in the Prime Video satirical series The Boys, which wrapped production for its fourth season last month, and previously appeared in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the 2009-2016 Star Trek films, Chronicles of Riddick, and Thor: Ragnarok.
Other works that Urban has been involved with include Dredd, Doom, The Bourne Supremacy, Red, and The Sea Beast.
Mortal Kombat 2 will be directed by Simon McQuaid, with a screenplay by Jeremy Slater. The first Mortal Kombat movie was released simultaneously in theaters and HBO Max (now Max) during the COVID-19 quarantine.
According to a report from Business InsiderMortal Kombat was the most-watched movie on the streaming service of all the films that HBO Max released to cinema and network simultaneously in 2021, which also included Dune and Godzilla vs. Kong, The Suicide Squad, and The Matrix Resurrections.
