Karl Stefanovic appears to be taking a thinly veiled swipe at former co-anchor Lisa Wilkinson as he declares the Today show’s team ‘has never been better’

The Today show is celebrating its 40th anniversary this week and host Karl Stefanovic has wasted no time looking back.

The star of the breakfast show appeared to be a thinly veiled swipe at his former co-host Lisa Wilkinson in a telling interview with 9Honey this week.

The 47-year-old star said the current Today team, including current co-host Allison Langdon, was “the best ever” with “everyone amazing friends off-camera.”

After the not-so-subtle dig at Wilkinson, with whom he co-hosted the Today show for ten years until 2017, Stefanovic made an attempt at diplomacy.

“That’s not a small thing with the previous teams,” he said.

“It’s been (just) some great years for us, even though we’ve gone through some real extremes in what’s happening in the world.”

Stefanovic has been on Today since 2005 when he took over co-hosting duties from Steve Leibmann. After being fired by Nine in late 2018, he returned in 2020.

Stefanovic was full of affection for his Today teammates, including co-host Ally, entertainment reporter Brooke Boney and weather forecaster Tim Davies.

He said the challenging time of COVID restrictions has brought the current team closer together.

“There was a lot of cabin fever stuff going on,” he said.

“But if you can get through that, I think it was symptomatic of what was going on out there in viewer land. That we got through that without killing each other shows how much we agree.’

Tensions between Stefanovic and Wilkinson flared during last month’s Logie Awards.

The breakfast TV peers turned rivals had to sit far apart during industry night, reports the Australian

“Care was taken in the placement of the seats to ensure Wilkinson got enough distance from Stefanovic,” the newspaper’s Media Diary said.

However, the Australian reported that the breakfast TV colleagues who had become rivals had to sit far apart during the night of the industry.

The rift between the pair escalated late last year when Wilkinson released her memoir, It Wasn’t Meant To Be.

She claims her co-host pitted rival networks Nine and Seven against each other to get a better deal for herself, all the while being left in the dust.

Stefanovic soon found himself at the center of a bidding war between Nine and Seven, which led him to re-sign a five-year deal with Nine worth at least $2 million a year.

Wilkinson’s deal was worth considerably less, about $780,000 a year, and was only for two years. She was reportedly pushed out the door by Nine executives in 2017.
