A newspaper from Nine Entertainment has confirmed that Karl Stefanovic is set to return to the Today's show of the network and appears alongside 60-minute reporter Allison Langdon.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Stefanovic would return almost a year after he started from the struggling breakfast program.

There has been speculation about the 45-year-old's return to the show after seeing Nine Headquarters earlier this week.

Stefanovic was kicked out of the program on December 19 last year after 14 years. The sensational dumping came only a few days after his lavish Mexican wedding with Jasmine Yarbrough, 35.

The marriage, which included a magazine deal with a rival company, is believed to have been the last straw with Nine's management after years of negative press after the end of his marriage to Cassandra Thorburn in 2016.

Stefanovic will reportedly take a huge wage cut of hundreds of thousands of his dollars from his current $ 2 million salary and lead a new team that will replace current hosts Georgie Gardner and Deb Knight.

New hosts Georgie Gardner and Deb Knight from the Today show have struggled to compete with Seven & # 39; s Sunrise, with ratings from the Nine show reaching a low of 155,000 last Friday. This was almost half of Sunrise's 277,000

Stefanovic had admitted earlier in the year that he was not at the top of his game and felt insufficient in his role as a host.

& # 39; I struggled towards the end of last year, & # 39; he said.

& # 39; I was cooked … you can't do that show unless you're at the top of your game. & # 39;

Speculation about the return of Stefanovic follows the revelations of Daily Mail Australia on Wednesday that Today Extra host Sonia Kruger will leave the network for Seven after having offered an additional $ 1 million for three years.

For comparison: today ratings show around 300,000 in 2016 and 2017 when Stefanovic hosted Lisa Wilkinson.

& # 39; Nine have waited a whole year to see signs of improvement, but now that the ratings are softer, they have to act, & # 39; said an anonymous source.

& # 39; The momentum is going in the wrong direction.

& # 39; Nine is doing well in prime time, but all headlines about Today take away the shine of success & # 39 ;, the source said.

Stefanovic would then see the rest of his time with the network as presenter at 60 minutes.
