Perhaps a more accurate question would be: what on earth is such a big-name Hollywood star doing on ITV? But Karrn, who grew up in Inverness and has lived in the US for almost a decade, says she is delighted to be back in her homeland.
“It’s been really nice to be back in the UK and work with everyone I love so much,” he says of Douglas Is Cancelled, written by fellow Scot Steven Moffat (of Sherlock fame and who directed Doctor Who from 2009 to 2017) and also starring Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville.
Douglas Is Cancelled leaves Bonneville, who shares a morning TV couch with Gillan’s character, in hot water after an ill-advised comment at a wedding goes viral.
Comparisons will inevitably be drawn with real-life cancellation controversies, including those involving Phillip Schofield and Huw Edwards.
In fact, at one point, Bonneville speaks to his agent, who warns him that he risks meeting the same fate as his fellow announcers “what’s-his-name” and the other one.
