Kamala Harris's bratty summer is almost over. What's next?

Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus): The president will not run for a second term. Oh my God, I will run. Oh my God.

By Reid Scott: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Wait, lady, give me these straight poop ears, is this for real?

Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus): It is totally-

By Reid Scott: Yeah.

Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus): TRUE.

By Reid Scott: Oh, thank you.

Hunter Harris: People who know Veep by heart, it’s our season, let me tell you that.

Leah Feiger: It’s very good.

Hunter Harris: But my point is that it was actually ridiculous the extent to which Kamala Harris was being publicly (and apparently privately) undermined.

Leah Feiger: Yes, absolutely.

Hunter Harris: And then I think it worked in her favor the degree to which the Biden campaign had basically covered her up.

Leah Feiger: Yeah.

Hunter Harris: For all the reasons the Internet and young people had become disillusioned with Kamala — her record as a prosecutor, her stance on Gaza — people sort of forgot that she was less progressive than she seemed.

Leah Feiger: Yeah, totally, totally. Yeah, she just showed up. It’s an underdog story, that’s how it feels, which is funny, because she’s on the side of the incumbents.

Hunter Harris: It’s shocking that someone who has been so close to the presidency for the past four years is the loser in this narrative because:

Leah Feiger: Yeah.

Hunter Harris: But he handles it very well, I think…

Leah Feiger: Yeah.

Hunter Harris: Yes, I wonder when all this will change, when politics will become…

Leah Feiger: Oh yeah.

Hunter Harris: Politics again, not pop culture, and then it seems like, well, we’re back to the point where none of this is very funny.

Leah Feiger: Well, I guess that brings me to the question: Is brat summer over? Let’s talk about it: Biden is dropping out, Charlie XCX wrote on X that Kamala is a brat. The Harris campaign took advantage of that and shifted a ton of their social resources. They’ve been doing things that the Biden campaign couldn’t have even dreamed of with social media. What are you seeing in terms of changing trends, things that are maybe changing, even the debate about it? Like you can’t have a brat summer in October.

Hunter Harris: Absolutely. I think the brat summer phenomenon will eventually die out, although Obama just included a brat song on his annual summer playlist. I said:

Leah Feiger: I love the intern at the top. That whole playlist makes me think, “This is amazing.”

Hunter Harris: There’s something very petty to me about the fact that you don’t include Chappell Roan, as the musical story of the summer that was absent from your playlist.

Leah Feiger: I was looking for Hot to Go, that’s what I wanted to see appear on Obama’s playlist.
