The parade announcement wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine throughout the community. Organizers said they had faced homophobic and transphobic sentiment on social media leading up to the day.
As a result, Six Nations Pride Outreach, a grassroots group in Six Nations of the Grand River, Ont. issued one open letter support the parade, stating that homophobia and transphobia is “an inherent contradiction” to Kanien’kehá:ka principles of peace, love, strength and unity.
“Our nations depend on each of us as individuals to honor and protect each other,” the letter said.
“Love, strength, support and gratitude is how we build each other and our communities, especially in times when hatred, ignorance and violence try to keep us oppressed.”
