After FC Bayern Munich’s second playful title, CEO Oliver Kahn looked to the future with a fighting spirit.
“We will attack again next season,” announced the 53-year-old after the Champions League knockout against Manchester City on Wednesday evening. “We would also have liked to progress in the cup against Freiburg and against ManCity,” said Kahn after the 1-1 draw, which against the English soccer champions after the 3-0 loss in the first leg was not enough to qualify for the semi-finals of the premier class.
Kahn praised his own team for the performance against Man City. “It was a strong performance from the team overall, especially in the first half. If we take the lead it will be very tight for Manchester City,” said the former international goalkeeper. “We don’t make the chances pure,” he named a central shortcoming. He did not make any allegations: “The boys threw everything in. Now it just wasn’t enough.”
Kahn demands focus on the championship
Kahn once again defended the managerial change from Julian Nagelsmann to Thomas Tuchel in the middle of the decisive phase of the season. “We are totally convinced that with Thomas Tuchel we will sooner or later be back where we all want to be, namely at the top – also in Europe,” said Kahn.
But priority is now given to the Bundesliga in the coming weeks: “Now the main focus is on what we can still achieve, that is the German championship. Now our full concentration is on the title that we can still win this season.” With six games left to play in the season, Bayern are leading the Bundesliga by two points ahead of Borussia Dortmund.
The game against Man City showed him “what the team is capable of. I saw a lot today that we will need in the last games of the Bundesliga to win this title,” said Kahn.
