Chelsea reduced the gap between them and tenth-placed Newcastle to one point with a deserved victory over the Magpies at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.

Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring with a beautiful move in the sixth minute, but the visitors responded through Alexander Isak.

Cole Palmer restored Chelsea’s lead with a beautiful strike before substitute Mykhailo Murdryk doubled their lead after being thrashed.

Jacob Murphy scored with a fierce strike, but it proved to be merely a consolation.

So much for Wrexham?

An email arrived in the inboxes of Chelsea fans on Monday telling them that VIP tickets for their pre-season match against Wrexham were now on sale.

The price of the diamond package? Only $2,995 (£2,338) per person. For that, hopefully a gift bag containing real diamonds will be included.

Strasbourg fans are fed up

Chelsea’s owners kicked off their multi-club model by adding Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace to their portfolio less than a year ago.

However, supporters of the Ligue 1 side, who are yet to win in 2024 and are fighting relegation under Patrick Vieira, plan to march in protest against their Clearlake Capital overlords later this month.

Strasbourg’s largest fan group, Ultra Boys 90, say they are being used as Chelsea’s puppets, adopting a policy where they only sign players aged 21 or younger to see if they sink or swim. At this moment, Vieira’s Strasbourg is sinking.

Jackson’s skillful film

Nicolas Jackson’s move was so disguised that Chelsea’s first goal was initially awarded to Cole Palmer at Stamford Bridge.

But replays showed it was a shrewd touch by the £32m striker. At least Jackson can now say that he has as many Premier League goals as yellow cards: nine each.

The U21 clash is unilateral

Newcastle’s Under 21 team are bottom of the Premier League 2 table after their latest defeat – a 7-1 drubbing by Chelsea. Jamie Miley, Lewis’ older brother, was among those lining up for the losers.

The relationship with Senegal is flourishing

Pape Daouda Diong is a 17-year-old young man who trains with Chelsea after arriving from the Darou Salam Academy in Senegal.

Already internationalized with his country, the plan is to send the midfielder to Strasbourg when he turns 18 in June.

Chelsea rolled out the red carpet for Senegalese academy president Galasse Mbacke in Cobham last week in a sign of their blossoming relationship, but club sources insist there is no official partnership.

A present star

Adam Sandler was at Stamford Bridge and one can imagine the regret among those looking for puns in the press box that Billy Gilmour no longer plays for Chelsea.

Academy talents replace sick stars

Conor Gallagher missed three days of training this week due to illness. His absence, along with others, caused Chelsea to call up nine graduates of their academy to train with the first team.
