  • The Blues will not pay De Ligt’s escape clause, but will opt for a swap deal

Juventus CEO Maurizio Arrivabene has revealed it could be impossible for them to keep star defender Matthijs de Ligt if he wants to leave for Chelsea this summer.

The Blues are after the former Ajax captain and are in talks about a possible swap deal with Christian Pulisic or Timo Werner plus money.

Chelsea have turned down initial offers but boss Thomas Tuchel has not given up hopes of a contract with Holland International as he looks to bolster his defense after losing both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers.

Juve chief Maurizio Arrivabene says they will be happy to do business if asking price is met

Juventus chief Arrivabene, however, appears to have boosted the Blues’ hopes of landing De Ligt this summer – saying they will be happy to do business as long as their asking price is met.

He told Tuttosport: “It is impossible to keep players if they want to leave the club – but all three parties in the negotiations must be satisfied.”

Chelsea believe De Ligt’s £102 million release clause is too expensive, so they started bidding with a player-plus-cash package worth around £40 million, plus a choice of Werner or Pulisic.

The Italian newspaper has previously reported that this pack was rejected by the Old Lady, with neither player being enough to entice them into a sale.

The same outlet also added that the West London side was aware that Juventus and manager Massimiliano Allegri are on the hunt for new strikers.

Allegri would not be ‘crazy’ at them, however, as Chelsea’s attempt fell short, but talks are said to be underway.

Though the Blues have also been linked with a host of names, including Internazionale’s Milan Skriniar and Sevilla’s Jules Kunde on the defensive, as they try to rebuild their squad this summer.

The Blues also continue to hunt for players like Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and are said to be closer to signing a deal for Leeds United winger Raphinha to refresh their attack.
