In the lengthy Instagram post, Timberlake said, “I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson, both separately, because I care about and respect these women and I know I’ve failed.”

Timberlake’s apology comes after he was tagged in social media posts about Spears and the campaign to free her from her father’s conservatorship.

It was recently highlighted in a documentary, Framing Britney Spears, which exposes how fans believe Spears has been exploited by the men in her life.

Fans say Timberlake is one of them. Dating from 1999 to 2002 after meeting at The Mickey Mouse Club, he and Spears were an iconic star duo. They broke up abruptly and soon rumors spread that she had cheated on him.

His career soared. Albums and songs were promoted under the story Spears broke his heart. In the music video for his 2002 hit Cry Me A River, he even used a Britney lookalike. Britney was vilified for their breakup.

It is unclear whether Timberlake has been in contact with the women to apologize privately.

Neither has yet publicly responded to his apologies.
