Justin Baldoni opened up about his experiences trying to define himself and dating in his 20s on Rainn Wilson’s Soul Bloom podcast.

“When I was in my twenties, I would try on, as I called it, the different masks of masculinity…like, let me pretend like I don’t give a shit about anything,” he explained.

‘And I fought. You know, I would meet someone and maybe like them, but then I was like, “Don’t text him. I can’t text him.” Because?’

The It Ends With Us actor and director, 40, continued: “So I didn’t text him those two days when I had so much anxiety.”

‘I thought, I want to tell him, I have these feelings. I was trying to be something that maybe I wasn’t at first and not text her or call her, but all I wanted to do was share my heart.

He continued to explain his thoughts, saying, “Then I realized, when I was in my twenties, that none of that was working for me.

“Then I started to question things and when I met my wife it was like a lightbulb went on. When I realized what if it’s just me? What if I was myself and shared every part of myself with her?’

Fans responded positively to her admission with many admitting they wish more men were as respectful, while others said they are still doing the things the Jane the Virgin star revealed.

One commenter said: ‘Beautiful. I believe that true masculinity IS being yourself with your partner and sharing your whole being. When you’re afraid to do that, it’s more your ego, fear of rejection or sense of pride that gets in your way.’

He spoke of a similar sentiment in a 2017 interview with creators and how everything worked out for him when he met his wife Emily.

“One of the things I learned from my mother was to trust my intuition, which is something I wish more men would take advantage of,” he said.

“I had made the same mistake so many times, searching through a package for something I thought I would want,” he explained.

‘When I met Emily, it was different from all my other experiences. He had a depth and a grace and a quiet strength that I think I always dreamed of and I just knew.
