Jurgen Klopp insists James Milner ‘seems fine’ after a blow to the head during Champions League win over Napoli – but Liverpool boss warns ‘we probably need to do further checks’ before the midfielder is passed fit

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted James Milner will be subject to further scrutiny after sustaining a head injury in their 2-0 win over Napoli.

The 36-year-old was recalled to basics and handed over the captain’s armband for their Champions League game last night.

However, the veteran midfielder received a heavy blow to the head that drew blood in the first half at Anfield to end his evening early.

The experienced midfielder was hit on the head and was forced out in the 48th minute

The former Manchester City man was treated and then played on into the early part of the second half, when he went down under his own power and the bench signaled that he could not continue.

Milner was replaced by the younger Harvey Elliott in the 48th minute of the game and passed the armband to defender Virgil Van Dijk.

Klopp revealed that Milner ‘seems okay’, although more testing will be needed in accordance with concussion protocols.

“I don’t know,” Klopp admitted to the media after the game. “It seems fine now, but we probably need to do more checks.”

It comes as a blow to Liverpool, who seem to have had endless problems with injuries so far this season and may now need to add Milner to that list, along with Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Arthur Melo and Joel Matip.

If Milner suffers a concussion during Napoli’s game, he will not be able to travel to third-seeded Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday due to Premier League rules.

Milner’s injury is yet another blow to Klopp’s Liverpool, which seem to have endless problems

You could imagine that both Liverpool and the Premier League will take this injury seriously and take all the required tests, especially given the recent situation with Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The Premier League is demanding answers from Villa as to why Martinez was allowed to continue playing against Newcastle despite head trauma.

Villa has been criticized for the way they handled Martinez’s injury, as they did last year when John McGinn went on for 34 minutes against Everton after a headbutt before becoming dizzy and requiring a concussion replacement.

The FA’s advice is ‘when in doubt, wait and see’ and club doctors are responsible for ensuring teams follow that rule.

Villa’s Tyrone Mings crashed into Martinez’s temple, which was treated for five minutes. He was cleared to continue before he succumbed to his injury and was replaced by a replacement for a concussion.

The Premier League will now ask Villa for their comments on the incident.

Villa caretaker boss Aaron Danks said after Saturday’s 4-0 defeat: “We have a very professional medical staff who assessed him and he was fine to continue.

“Obviously things have changed and there was a delayed start to something that had to get him off.”
