The Room Next Door had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada on Saturday night.

Described as ‘an intimate and visually exquisite adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s What Are You Going Through’ by FIGHTRenowned Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar makes his English-language feature debut with the Spanish drama starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore.

The two leading ladies looked incredible as they hit the red carpet, with Moore sporting a plunging white gown with red floral appliqués on the chest and skirt.

Swinton showed off her unique sense of style in a silky white blouse tucked into a pair of cream satin trousers.

Written and directed by Almodóvar, the plot addresses the breakup between Martha (Swinton), a very imperfect mother and war correspondent, and her resentful daughter, as well as the former’s relationship with the writer Ingrid (Moore).

As he has done throughout his career dating back to 1974, Almodóvar wrote and directed the drama, which also stars John Turturro and Alessandro Nivola.

The cast also includes characters such as Juan Diego Botto, Melina Matthews, Raúl Arévalo, Victoria Luengo, Esther McGregor, Alex Høgh Andersen and Alvise Rigo.

Originally from Calzada de Calatrava, Spain, Almodóvar’s numerous directorial credits include the Festival selections Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), Talk to Her (2002), Bad Education (2004), Volver (2006), Broken Embraces (2009), Julieta (2016), and Pain and Glory (2019).

In fact, this is the second Golden Lion that the filmmaker has received, after the honorary one he received in 2019.

“This is my first film in English but the spirit is Spanish,” Almodóvar, 74, revealed during his impassioned speech.

Variety’s Owen Gleiberman described The Room Next Door as “a deceptively simple yet clever journey into the river of emotions that accompanies the impulse to end one’s own life.”

The film will premiere at the 62nd New York Film Festival at Alice Tully Hall on October 4, as part of its US debut.

The Room Next Door is scheduled to be released in theaters in Spain on October 18.
