- U.S. District Judge Linda Parker said lawyers engaged in ‘abusive’ practices
- Powell and Wood filed a lawsuit in November alleging election rigging
- The sanctions have been referred to their home state for disciplinary action
- They will have to take 12 hours of legal classes and can be suspended

A federal judge on Wednesday sanctioned attorneys Sidney Powell, Lin Wood and nine others for working on lawsuits related to the reversal of the 2020 election results.
U.S. District Judge Linda Parker, of Michigan’s Eastern District, said the group of attorneys “engaged in litigation” that was “offensive and in turn criminal.”
Powell, Wood and the rest of the MAGA attorneys filed a lawsuit in Parker’s District Court last November, alleging that the results of the 2020 presidential election were illegitimate and that the vote had been rigged to help Joe Biden win.
Parker said the lawsuit was a sham intended to mislead the court and the public just days after Biden’s 154,000-vote victory was certified in the state, and was crammed with “speculation and conjecture” about the trial’s trial. counting votes.
“Despite the haze of confusion, commotion and chaos that the defense counsel deliberately tried to create by filing this lawsuit, one thing is perfectly clear: The plaintiffs’ lawyers have disregarded their oaths, broken the rules and tried along the way to protect the integrity of the undermine the judiciary,” Parker wrote in her 110-page advisory released Wednesday.
Sanctions are needed to discourage the filing of future frivolous lawsuits that are primarily intended to spread the story that our electoral processes have been manipulated and our democratic institutions cannot be trusted.

Parker’s sanctions have now been referred to each of the attorneys’ home states for disciplinary action and they could face financial penalties or exclusion.
They have also been ordered to take 12 hours of legal classes – including six hours in electoral law – before their possible sentences are determined.
The lawsuit was filed last fall on behalf of six Republican voters who wanted Parker to decertify Michigan results and confiscate voting machines. The judge rejected the request in December, calling the request “stunning in scope and breathtaking in its scope.”
Parker ordered the attorneys to reimburse the legal fees that the Detroit and Michigan city officials spent as they sought sanctions.
A lawyer from the city of Detroit said their lawsuit was designed to spread lies about the election and asked Michigan federal court to punish the lawyers.
Michigan Democratic government Gretchen Whitmer praised the judge’s ruling on Wednesday.
She said in a statement it “sends a clear message: Those who attempt to overthrow a US election and poison the wellspring of American democracy will face consequences.”
“I appreciate the unmistakable message she is sending with this statement — those who promise to uphold the Constitution must answer for giving up that oath,” said Michigan Democrat Attorney General Dana Nessel.
Multiple attorneys affiliated with Trump have filed lawsuits alleging election rigging in multiple courts across the country, but none have succeeded.
Trump allies have now turned to election audits in states like Arizona and Pennsylvania in an effort to prove vote-harvesting and other irregularities.
In a July court hearing, Powell took “full responsibility” for the lawsuit, comparing the legal battle to the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court ruling banning racial segregation in schools.
“It is the duty of lawyers and the highest tradition of legal practice to raise difficult and even unpopular issues,” Powell told the judge, adding that attempts to impose sanctions may affect the public’s view of the justice system. would decrease.
Wood’s name was on the lawsuit, but he insisted he had no role other than telling Powell that he would be available if she needed an experienced attorney.
Wood and Powell are not the first lawyers to be punished for their lawsuits in 2020.
Rudy Giuliani had his law license on hold in New York and Washington DC due to his election fraud lawsuits.
