Journey singer Arnel Pineda has put his fate in the band in the hands of the fans.
The 57-year-old Sampaloc, Philippines-born singer on Sunday suggested fans vote on whether he should stay in the band or not, following a highly scrutinized performance on Sept. 15 at the Rock in Rio festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Pineda, who has fronted the band since 2007, posted a clip on Facebook in which an in-ear monitor appeared to malfunction, affecting his performance on the band’s hit Don’t Stop Believin’.
Pineda said: “No one in this world feels more devastated by this than me.”
He continued: ‘It’s truly amazing how a thousand good things you’ve done will be forgotten just because of THIS… and of all places, it’s Rock In Rio… mentally and emotionally, I’ve already suffered, and I’m still suffering… but I’ll be okay…’

Pineda then made his offer to leave the band if the fans voted him out.
“So here’s the deal now… I’m offering you all a chance (especially those who hated me and never liked me from the start) to just text the word GO or STAY here,” he said. “And if GO hits a million… I’m gone forever… Are you playing, folks? Let’s get started…”
Pineda concluded by saying: “God bless you all and thank you once again to all the fans and friends who believed in me.”

Pineda said in a 2014 interview with the AP that he would “be more than happy to step down” to the band’s original singer, Steve Perry, if he wanted to return to the band.
“As long as they need me, I will be there, I will never abandon them,” he said.

“He’s been having a hard time and we brought in a vocal coach who’s fantastic,” Castronovo said. “He came in and taught Arnel how to sing a little bit differently.
Pineda has led the band since 2007.

“A lot of it was mental and physical… to think that he’s been struggling with this for 14 years,” she said. “I had no idea. I think it was something that he didn’t know if he had the freedom to say, ‘Hey, I need to fix this,’ or ‘You guys need to try something different here,’ or get a new sound guy or whatever.”
