Jose Mourinho agreed to take charge of Liverpool in 2004 before Chelsea cut the deal to poach the winning manager of the Champions League instead, a new book claims.
The famous 57-year-old reportedly agreed to join Anfield and replace Gerard Houllier, but Roman Abramovich dove in with a higher bid and convinced Mourinho to move to West London.
A new book, Mourinho: Behind the Special One, from the origin to the glory, written by French journalist Nicolas Vilas, details the struggle between two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs to attack the divisive tactician.

Liverpool decided to contact potential successors to Houllier, who seemed to falter in his efforts to lead the club to the top four – although the Frenchman ultimately secured top European football.
However, the club had already put together a shortlist of possible substitutes and Mourinho, who was in control of Porto at the time, was one of the candidates.
Negotiations to capture Mourinho started in April 2004, according to the book, just before the quarter-final showdown in Lyon with the Champions League in Lyon.

Jorge Baidek, Mourinho’s adviser at the time, said: “Mourinho should have gone to Liverpool. Rick Parry [then chief executive] was responsible for transfers and we had an agreement.
“They asked us to wait 15 days because Houllier was still the manager of the Reds.”
But despite Mourinho seeming to be getting closer to the hot seat on Merseyside, Chelsea jumped sensationally to change his mind.
Super agent Jorge Mendes is said to have informed the Blues that they might be able to lure Mourinho to Stamford Bridge, and together helped the club piece into a more attractive offering.

The Portuguese coach first met Abramovich the night before the Champions League semi-finals in Porto in May.
And the deal was finalized after a new meeting aboard the billionaire’s luxury yacht in Monaco, just the day after Porto won the Champions League trophy.
Mourinho repented notoriously three Premier League titles, an FA Cup and three League Cups during his two spells with the best flight giants.
