The moment came with Australia 217-7 at the start of the 47th over, Smith facing up to Chris Woakes first ball.

The ball trickled down towards Bairstow and Smith called a single, but Buttler raced back and was able to fire it back down to the non-striker’s end as it clattered the stumps before Smith could ground his bat.

That wicket broke a 51-run stand between Smith and Mitchell Starc, before Butler then caught Starc behind off the very next ball.

Having dismissed Australia for 223 all out, England then took to bat with good prospects of reaching a first World Cup final since 1992.
