The original movie followed Kid (Christopher ‘Kid’ Reid) and Play (Christopher ‘Play’ Martin) as the latter plans an epic house party.

The party turns out to be the most incredible night of their young lives as they interact with nosy neighbors (John Witherspoon, Bebe Drake), Kid’s stern dad (Robin Harris) and a trio of thugs (Paul Anthony, Bowlegged Lou and B-Fine from full power).

The film marked Reginald Hudlin’s (Boomerang) writing and directorial debut and helped legitimize hip-hop as a musical art form.

The original film was a surprise blockbuster that spawned several sequels and helped launch the careers of Kid n Play, Tisha Martin-Campbell, Martin Lawrence, AJ Johnson, Daryl ‘Chill’ Mitchell and Full Force.

No plot details have been given for the reboot, although Calmatic will direct from a script by Emmy-winning writing duo Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori (Atlanta).

James and Maverick Carter will produce through their SpringHill Entertainment company, with the project being a high priority for both producers.

Both James and Carter were big fans of the original film, which still holds a ‘special place’ in their hearts, with New Line seeing franchise potential in the reboot.

Original writer-director Reginald Hudlin and original producer Warrington Hudlin will executive produce with SpringHill’s Spencer Beighley and Jamal Henderson.

Now that the male leads have been found, casting will focus on their female counterparts, with some surprising cameos planned.
