Ajax have won perhaps the most chaotic and dramatic penalty shoot-out of all time after beating Greek side Panathinaikos 13-12, including nine missed shots between the two teams.

Dutch giants Ajax faced Panathinaikos in the second leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie on Thursday evening in Amsterdam. The hosts went into the tie with a 1-0 lead.

However, it was their Greek opponents who scored in the 90th minute, with Tete grabbing an equaliser in the 89th minute to force extra time.

As no one could make a difference in the extra 30 minutes, penalties were taken… and it was a very tough battle.

It was a nightmare start for Panathinaikos after Daniel Mancini missed the opening kick, with Ajax quickly going 4-3 up before Brian Brobbey popped up to seal the win.

Incredibly, however, Manchester United’s former target managed to miss, allowing the Greek side back into the tie.

But the drama was by no means over. Jordan Henderson scored his spot kick before both teams missed two more attempts each, leaving the score at 5-5 after 16 spot kicks.

For another 14 shots, including those from goalkeepers Remko Pasveer and Bartlomiej Dragowski, neither team missed the target as the war of attrition continued in the Dutch capital.

Then, after the penalty order had been restarted due to the length of the shoot-out, Pasveer saved Filip Mladenovic’s shot. Brobbey again came close to the penalty spot but missed his second chance and saved Mladenovic’s embarrassment.

But after Tony Vilhena missed the ninth penalty of the match (Pasveer amazingly saved his fifth shot), Anton Gaaei finally put everyone out of their misery and put an end to the chaos.

In fact, the penalty shoot-out lasted more than 25 minutes, with the jubilant fans inside the ground having a good time.

Those supporters also did their part to support Brobbey, with reports claiming the striker’s name was chanted throughout the stadium after his two failed attempts.

Henderson was actually due to take the final penalty as he was Ajax’s sixth designated penalty taker, but after the match he revealed why he let Gaaei play.

“After Brian Brobbey missed, Anton Gaaei said to me: ‘If they score now, you can do it, but if they miss, can I do it?'” he admitted to Ziggo Sport.

“I said, ‘Yeah, go and get your glory.’ And he’s probably better at taking penalties anyway. He deserves it, he’s a great kid.”

Pasveer was the hero of the tie, though, saving five penalties – although he would later reportedly tell Ziggo, in true Roy Keane style: “That’s my job, isn’t it?”
