John Mulaney has detailed his wife Olivia Munn’s mind-blowing resilience after she lost “a lot of blood” during surgery at the height of her cancer battle.
The comedian, 42, took the stage to present his wife, 44, with a Woman of Impact award at last night’s InStyle Imagemaker Awards, in recognition of her activism in women’s health following her diagnosis of breast cancer in 2023.
During his emotional speech, John told how Olivia had bravely expressed that she was determined not to let her battle with the disease “loom over” their lives.
He said: ‘We were in hospital for Olivia’s third surgery in September 2023 and she had lost a lot of blood during her second surgery so we were both a bit nervous.
“She told me, ‘I just read this book about Jackie O. Jackie O. never got over the murder of her husband.’
John Mulaney has revealed his wife Olivia Munn’s resilience amid her battle with cancer
During his emotional speech at InStyle’s Imagemaker Awards, John told how Olivia had expressed that she didn’t want her battle with the disease to “loom over” their lives.
“I said, ‘No, I get it, it was a big deal.'” She said, “He always regretted not getting over it.”
“She said, ‘I’m scared, but I’m putting up with all of this and I’m not going to let it hang over our lives.’ “I’m getting over it.”
“I thought about how lucky our children are to have you as a mother, how lucky I am to have you as my partner in life.”
Olivia was initially diagnosed with luminal B breast cancer in both breasts in April 2023.
Since then, she has undergone five surgeries, including a complete hysterectomy and a complete double mastectomy.
“We learned a lot from it,” John continued in his speech.
‘We found out he would need five surgeries. We learned that there was a risk of lymphedema.
‘We learned that if we hadn’t caught it when we caught it, things could have been much worse.
John presented Olivia with the Woman of Impact award at the October 24 ceremony.
The couple celebrated Olivia’s recognition with a kiss.
‘I also learned that it is not pronounced “masectomy”, but “mastectomy”.
‘It has a T. It shouldn’t. It should be “masectomy.” I think it’s ironic that the word itself has a part that needs to be removed.
Olivia and her husband John recently became parents to two children: the couple welcomed their second child together, a daughter, Méi June Mulaney, who was born via surrogate last month.
The couple also shares two-year-old son Malcolm.
Earlier this week, Olivia showed off her mastectomy scars while taking part in a powerful new ad campaign for Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS brand.
She was not wearing a top as she posed with a visible scar on her left breast.
The star opened up about her dire health situation in a video taken for the campaign, telling the camera: “Someone told me this phrase, it meant a lot and it really touched me.”
“When it comes to breast cancer, welcome to the worst club with the best members.”
“My name is Olivia Munn and I am a breast cancer survivor,” she continued.
‘When I look at the scars or how my breasts look different or how clothes fit differently, I feel a lot of gratitude.
“The way my body looks is just a representation of how hard I’ve fought.”
