Elton John and his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin received the Library of Congress’s 2024 Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in Washington, DC, on Tuesday.

The singer, 76, and his longtime collaborator, 73, took the stage at the Library of Congress dinner.

The award is named for another songwriting team, George and Ira Gershwin, whose papers are held at the library.

Elton and Bernie have worked together since they met in 1967. Bernie writes the lyrics and sends them to Elton who takes them to the piano and creates a song.

Your Song, Tiny Dancer, Rocket Man, Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road are some of the songs they created together.

Speaking about the honour, Elton said: “I’ve been writing songs with Bernie for 56 years, and we never thought that one day this could be bestowed upon us.

“It’s an incredible honor for two Brits to be recognized like this. I’m so honoured.

Bernie added: “To be in a house with the great American songwriters, even to be on the same avenue is humbling, and I’m absolutely delighted to accept.”

Elton is reportedly in talks to create a musical based on his excellent catalog of classic hits.

The Rocket Man hitmaker, who played his final concerts last summer, is exploring the possibility of creating his own stage show which would include hits like Your song, Candle In The Wind and Tiny Dancer, The sun reported.

While the publication was addressed to her husband David Furnish at 32nd edition of the Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscars during the viewing party on Sunday, he revealed that the two were still thinking about it.

David, 61, said: “We always look at a musical catalog. I haven’t found anything yet that really covers…I think if we were going to do it, we’d want to do it in a really innovative, really exciting, different way.

“We’re open to all good ideas and it’s a wonderful catalog. But right now, with the other two musicals, we’re pretty busy.
