Murder victim Sydney Sutherland’s best friend and family says her alleged rapist and murderer should face the death penalty.

Quake Lewellyn, 28, was taken into custody for the rape and murder of 25-year-old Sydney Sutherland after her body was dumped in Newport in rural Arkansas at the end of September last year.

Now her best friend says Lewellyn should face the death penalty if he goes to court later this year and that months after her murder, they are still “living in a nightmare.”

Lewellyn told police he plowed Sutherland with his truck while she was driving at 41 South Jackson County Road on August 19, 2020, according to court documents obtained by the Arkansas Democrat Gazette in October.

He then reportedly admitted loading Sutherland’s body into his truck and driving her to an abandoned field. Police said Lewellyn subsequently raped Sutherland and buried her body.

Quake’s attorneys Bill James and Jeff Rosenzweig have filed 48 different motions in the Jackson County Circuit Court against the death penalty.

“The prosecutor seems to be pushing it, and I hope it sticks,” said Sydney’s best friend Liz. The sun.

“It’s a slow process with a lot of motions filed so I’m sure it will take a long time.”

“Everyone is still in shock and heartbroken, we are all living in a nightmare.”

Defense attorney Bill James argued in court documents, “What happened was a terrible accident and nothing was deliberate.”

The jury selections for the case begin September 28.

Maggy Sutherland, the jogger’s 55-year-old mother, said earlier The sun: ‘Everyone is still in shock, it just doesn’t seem real. It is as if we are living in a nightmare, not only the family but also the community. ‘

She added: “As a family, we live from day to day trying to get through this tragedy. We mourn in the best way we know. Not a day goes by when we don’t think about her and miss her beautiful smile. ‘

'For me he deserves the death penalty, he's a monster, an evil monster. She didn't deserve that, ”she said

Nicknamed ‘Sassy’, Maggy described her daughter as a very ‘beautiful, caring and loving person’. She added that the pair were “best friends.”

Maggy thinks Lewellyn deserves the death penalty and hopes he will receive it at trial next year.

“I don’t know what he got out of it because he had a beautiful life, a young woman who had a bright future,” claimed the heartbroken mother. ‘He was very cruel to do what he did and the way he did it.

‘For me he deserves the death penalty, he’s a monster, an evil monster. She didn’t deserve that. ‘

Maggy said she visits the various areas where her daughter was last seen and where Sydney’s body was found just days after she was reported missing.

She said, ‘I’m still going where it was, I’ve walked it, I’ve taken every step she’s taken, trying to see what happened. He will never tell the truth. ‘

Sydney’s mother, a receptionist at a local dental office, said the family had just returned from a trip to Destin, Florida, when the jogger went missing.

“We had a great trip and she loved the beach. Everything was right that day, ”Maggy said. ‘She came over, we talked a little bit, and she went to get my mail and she came back.

‘She left and I said,’ I love you, I’ll talk to you later ‘. She said, “I love you too.” And that was the last I heard from her. ‘

At around 5:00 PM, Maggy realized her daughter was missing when she received a call from Sydner’s friend. She called other family members and soon they were looking all over the Newport to Sydney area.

‘I just threw up my hands and said,’ We’ve been all over that road that she walked and there was no sign, nothing. ‘ I said, “Something is wrong.” And then the tragedy began.

“I panicked, I just thought … did someone come over here, drug related, and snatch her away?”

Maggy contacted the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and had AT&T track the Sydney phone and Apple Watch as more people arrived at the couple’s house.
