- A woman jogging in St. Petersburg, Florida, early on Tuesday morning made a horrifying discovery of a decomposed human head along a road
- Police hunt through nearby forests for further remains or evidence
- They don’t believe the person died there
- Police say the head may have been left there since Sunday, when the woman last jogged along the route
- The head is so decomposed that researchers have not yet been able to identify a race or gender
Florida homicide investigators investigate the horrifying discovery of a decomposed human head found by a jogger along a road in St. Petersburg on Tuesday morning.
The woman made the horrifying find around 7 a.m. while jogging along 38th Avenue along the Interstate 275 flyover, police said.
The decapitated head is so decomposed that the researchers are unable to tell the gender or race at first.
Police are now looking for further remains or further evidence in a nearby wooded area, but have said the person probably did not die there because it was not yet a skeleton.
A tent had been built around the lawn where the head was found Tuesday morning as police continued their search for the nearby wooded area
The head was found on a lawn between the sidewalk and the edge of the road.
It is unclear how long he had been there.
The jogger had walked the same path on Sunday, but hadn’t seen his head. She did not pass the same area on Monday, but told the police that she drives the same route almost every day.
Researchers are asking people in the area if they have seen anything that can determine a timeline of when and how the head got to the side of the road.
Police said the area is not very busy due to the surrounding forests and the businesses in the area are currently closed.
They added that it is sometimes used as a traffic stop.
“The head is too decomposed to determine the sex,” said police spokeswoman Yolanda Patch.
“But it is a decomposing head, it is not a skeleton. Our investigators feel that the person has not died there, so they go into the forest to see if they can find any other remains.
St. Petersburg police said on Tuesday they started an investigation after a jogger found a decomposed human head on the side of a road that morning
Homicide investigators had kept the area closed while continuing their search for further remains, but do not believe the person died here. It is uncertain how long the head was there
“Many people might have thought it was just an animal, but she saw that it really looked like a human,” Fernandez added to the Tampa Bay Times.
A portion of 38th Avenue will remain closed to traffic while the investigation continues.
The head is given to the doctor for further examination.
The investigators asked anyone who may have information about the case to call the St. Petersburg Police Department at (727) 893-7780.
