Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton revealed what he said to his players ahead of their match with Sheffield Wednesday when he posted a photo of his tactics board.

The game finished 1-1 at Hillsborough on Wednesday in what was an important and hard-fought run for the 14th seeded Rovers against the Owls, who are currently third in League One.

Barton, who led his side to League Two promotion in his first full campaign last season, saw his side fight back into the game thanks to a second half equalizing goal from Josh Coburn.

Joey Barton revealed what he said to his team ahead of their match with Sheffield Wednesday

After the game, the former Manchester City and Newcastle midfielder posted his thoughts on the match, alongside several photos.

Barton tweeted: ‘Another solid team performance. Nice to be in those arenas with our amazing fan base. Thank you to everyone who has traveled.

‘Good team Sheff Wed and important for our group to work with them. See you all on Saturday. Safe journey home. Gas it up!’

However, a photo he posted showed his tactics board from the Rovers dressing room.

The complex piece of paper was covered with various plans, messages and motivational statements for its players.

The top of the sign said in capital letters ‘3 PTS AVAILABLE’.

His main instructions to his players were ‘start big’, ‘put them early’, ‘attack is the best form of defense’, ‘squeeze the space’ and ‘play in their half’.

The motivational messages on his side also include “show soccer courage”, “be brave”, “show the world tonight” and “decide to win”.

He also praised his side’s performance in their 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday

Other inspirational messages by his side included ‘you’re unique’, ‘a one off’, ‘a true superstar’ and ‘show the world tonight’.

There were also wise words when playing against a rowdy crowd and in one of the biggest stadiums in the league.

Barton told his team to “show a collective bed of discipline – no reactions: expect mind games” and pointed out that it was “18 from us against 18…their fans can’t help it!”

The final plans he showed his players included a diagram of “talking – encouraging – inspiring – uplifting – psychological effects.”
