A northern New South Wales man has been found guilty of violently assaulting and raping a woman at the luxury Star casino and hotel in 2022.
Joel Nathan Fitzpatrick Burtt, 22, was found guilty of four counts of rape, one of sexual assault and one of strangling a woman in a room at the five-star Sydney hotel.
Fitzpatrick Burtt heard the jury’s decision on Tuesday in the presence of his sisters and tearful mother at Sydney’s Downing Centre District Court.
His family sobbed and hugged him before prison officials led him out of the dock.
“I love you, Mom,” cried Fitzpatrick Burtt. “I’ll take care of myself.”
The jury found him guilty of brutally assaulting and raping the woman after a night of partying in Sydney on October 29, 2022.
The couple were returning to their hotel room after a mutual acquaintance’s birthday party when he grabbed the woman by the neck and forcibly restrained her.
After she refused his request for sex, he punched her in the head and raped her.

Fitzpatrick Burtt sexually assaulted her multiple times before kicking the woman in the face after she began crying, pouring ice on her as she lay on the ground and stomping on her, prosecutors said.
Witnesses heard screams coming from next door.
He then left the hotel room, spoke to hotel security and police before heading to a hospital.
