Joe Joyce returns to the ring against heavyweight Christian Hammer as ‘Juggernaut’ appears to aim for a clash against winner Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua: Everything to know before the fight

  • Joe Joyce returns to the ring as he takes on Christian Hammer next weekend
  • The Juggernaut was set to fight Joseph Parker before a deal fell through
  • Joyce hasn’t fought since his impressive KO win over Carlos Takam last July
  • He has recovered from a wrist injury that kept him out of the ring this year

Joe Joyce returns to the ring this weekend against veteran heavyweight campaigner Christian Hammer.

The ‘Juggernaut’ was expected to face off in a highly anticipated clash against former world champion Joseph Parker, before the New Zealander signed with air sportswho puts that deal on hold.

Promoter Ben Shalom revealed earlier this week that he has made an offer to step up the fight Sky Sports box office later this year, but Joyce also has his eyes on the winner of Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua, while To pull a joke Promoter Bob Arum has talked out a showdown against Tyson Fury.

Joyce, undefeated in 13 games, took an impressive knockout victory over Carlos Takam last July, having retired Daniel Dubois from heavyweight the year before.

However, the 36-year-old has not been as active as he would have liked, in part due to a wrist injury – from which he has since recovered – which forced him out of the ring earlier this year.

Hammer certainly knows his way around a ring, having been with the likes of Fury, the Gypsy King’s cousin, Hughie, Luis Ortiz, and Alexander Povetkin, though he lost on each occasion.

The 34-year-old took under a lap to stop journeyman Drazan Janjanin in May after losing on points to Frank Sanchez earlier this year. Joyce is expected to pass the test with little difficulty.

What was said?

Joyce, who trained for the game in Las Vegas, insisted that the test against Hammer will be good preparation for a bigger challenge ahead.

“I’ve known about Christian Hammer for a while,” he said. “He’s been fighting everyone, it’s going to be a good fight, he’s coming forward and it’s going to be exciting. It’s one to get me ready for the next battles to come.

“I’ve been out of the ring for a whole year now, so it’s good to dust off the gloves and shake off the cobwebs.

“It’s going to be a big year, this year and next, with some great fights and I just have to be in the right place.”

Joyce has also called up former sparring partner Joshua in the run-up to the fight.

He said: ‘If Joshua by some miracle defeats Usyk, he will have to face me or leave the belt.

“His chin is gone and I think his heart is not quite in the game anymore – he’s a businessman more interested in teaching students.”
