Joe Cole has urged Chelsea to commit Mason Mount to a new contract as a priority.
Mount’s current contract expires at the end of next season and he has yet to agree a new contract due to interest from Liverpool.
The 24-year-old has been criticized for his recent form, with Graham Potter’s side struggling.
However, former Chelsea star Cole believes The Blues need to remember just how good a player Mount is and the impact he’s made over the years.
Cole told 90min: ‘Mason Mount is probably sitting there thinking, ‘I’ve played for this club for three or four years now, I’ve won the Champions League, I’ve been pushed forward in every season…’.

Ex-Chelsea star Cole stated that the club may have forgotten how talented a player Mount is
“He’s a leader, he sacrifices himself for the team. He wants to stay at Chelsea, I’m sure. I don’t get it for the life of me, and I don’t know the trades – they’re probably far apart where they value each other. He probably thinks: ‘Where am I?’.
Cole is confident that Mount will ‘turn out fine’ and rediscover his best form.
He said: “He’s out of the team now, which is a dangerous position for Mason and for Chelsea. Football is very fickle, we can forget what a good player Mason Mount is. In fact, in this generation, players go away for three or four weeks and are forgotten. I think Chelsea should remember what a great player he is. He’ll be fine.
“(A contract extension) would be at the top of my list. There has to be a middle ground to solve it.’
Chelsea have reportedly suspended contract talks with Mount, who earns £80,000 a week
Chelsea have reportedly suspended contract talks with Mount. Mount would like to triple his current wages of £80,000 a week and would like to stay at Stamford Bridge.
Mount reportedly earns about a quarter of what his England team-mate Raheem Sterling makes at Chelsea.
Chelsea’s current priority is to improve their results, with the club currently languishing in tenth place in the Premier League.
They will be back in action on Sunday when they play against Tottenham.
Chelsea academy product Mount has made a total of 191 senior appearances for the club, during which time he has scored 33 goals and provided 37 assists. With The Blues he won the Champions League in 2021.
