Joe Cole believes Manchester City has been ‘given a boost’ by the news that Virgil van Dijk will end up with a prolonged bout with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Liverpool defender Van Dijk is expected to miss the rest of the season after the injury against Everton last weekend.
Although Liverpool won the Premier League title at a gallop last season, Cole believes City are now the favorites to win this competition.

Cole said of BT Sport, ‘When you play against teams that normally give you a tonking, it normally resonates against you.
‘From a Man City perspective I know it’s off the wall, but as Liverpool are losing Van Dijk it has given them a lift. Pep will say ‘listen, get together, let’s go back to what we were a year ago’ and they’ve been installed as favorites for the title. ‘

Lescott told BT Sport: ‘I think it gives everyone a ride, Joe. Because we don’t want players to get injured. Without Van Dijk you believe you can beat Liverpool and that is for every team.
“So the fact that Liverpool may drop more points, others will feel they can win this title.”
Going into their game against West Ham, City found themselves three points behind Liverpool for having played one less game.
Pep Guardiola’s side have been criticized lately, especially after losing to Leicester and a draw with Leeds, but they still have a very strong squad.
City won the Premier League title in 2018 and 2019, but finished 18 points behind Liverpool last season.
