President Joe Biden has appointed the wife of West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin to a federal committee – a benefit to the legislature who has been a key gatekeeper to important legislation and appointments.

Gayle Manchin’s appointment to co-chair the Appalachian Regional Commission was listed at the bottom of a White House release on several appointments in similar panels on Friday.

The committee helps award grants and fund projects designed to help communities in the economically struggling region, including parts of Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, and other parts of coal countries and counties across the Appalachian Mountain area.

Another important part of her bio is included in the release. Joe and Gayle have been married for 53 years and have three children and ten grandchildren, ‘it says.

Manchin helped kill Neera Tanden’s nomination to run the White House Office of Management and the budget. But in another demonstration of his rule, he gave his support after holding Colin Kahl to a high Pentagon post.

In the event of a tie, there was also a ‘yes’ vote from Manchin, which probably saved the nomination and made it possible to bring it to the floor.

His seat in a GOP-leaning state helps Democrats maintain control of the 50-50 Senate, although his positions have at times drawn fire from the left wing of his party.

Manchin is the only Democratic senator who did not participate in a major bill on voting rights that President Biden called a top priority at his first press conference at the White House Thursday.

He has said he likes some of the ideas in the bill, but wants to act in a two-pronged way – giving him the opportunity to serve as a linchpin in the negotiations.

His opposition to destroying the legislative filibuster includes him in a small band of Democrats who could hold the fate of the general Biden agenda in his hands.

The Appalachian Regional Commission awards numerous projects in the region, including education and health projects in Alabama, corporate grants in Kentucky, and sewer improvements in West Virginia.

He is against a minimum wage of $ 15 and is in favor of a smaller increase.
