According to the White House pool report, spectators in the National Mall cheered the president and the first lady.

Neither spoke.

Unlike his sons, Biden never served in the military.

He was never drafted to serve in Vietnam, as he was granted five reprieve while a university and law student, and then a medical exemption.

In 2008, when he ran for president for the second time, a spokesman said that Biden had been “disqualified as a teenager for asthma.”

Biden’s trip to the National Mall followed Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Denis McDonough, who visited earlier Monday.

In a video message he tweeted, McDonough also showed footage of the Vietnam Women’s Memorial, which is not as commonly known as the Great Wall.

‘Not everyone knows that this monument is here, it is very powerful, very moving and it is very fitting, at the end of the month of women’s history, that we stop here to also pay our respects and express our thanks to speak on behalf of a grateful nation to the women Vietnam War veterans – to thank them, ”McDonough said.

The women’s monument is a statue depicting three women taking care of a wounded soldier.

Biden traveled to the National Mall at a time when the National Park Service is trying to keep the crowds away, as it is ‘peak bloom’ for the cherry blossom trees that line the tidal basin and are present in nearby parks.

Traffic to part of the tidal basin has been cut to reduce the number of people traveling to the area, as public health experts warned Monday of rising COVID-19 numbers.

Biden’s trip to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial did not follow his official schedule.

While the White House pool reporters were loaded into a van, reporters saw Major Biden, the president’s rescue dog, walking down the South Lawn.
