Jodie Comer feared for her life after a French stalker threatened to kill her

Killing Eve star Jodie Comer feared for her life after a French stalker threatened to kill her before a man was arrested by police in France on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old actress, best known for her role as murderer Villanelle, alerted authorities after receiving sinister online threats, and an unnamed man, 44, was detained after officers stormed his home in the city of Roubaix.

Jodie, who was conspicuously absent from social media while police investigated her case, received terrifying messages from a stalker, including one warning: “I’m coming to England to cause carnage.”

It is thought that technology experts were called in after Jodie and her family received the threats, which were traced to the northern French city of Roubaix.

Armed officers raided the man’s home during a morning raid last month and held him in custody.

During the raid, computer files and other technical equipment were seized, with the man working with officers.

Prosecutors in Lille confirmed on Tuesday that the alleged threats from a man who lives in nearby Roubaix were “a matter of great concern”.

A spokesman for Lille prosecutors said: “Following an official approach by British authorities, a man has been taken into custody for intimidating an English actress.”

A man was arrested in Roubaix last month, the source said, and is currently on bail while prosecutors and judicial police await the results of a medical examination.

The “harassment campaign” started on social media and moved to email when members of Jodie’s immediate family were also threatened.

A police source in Roubaix said: “There is clearly great concern because someone has threatened the actress with death.

‘Police here were first contacted by British police on 30 June and asked to make inquiries, before the arrest.

“The investigation includes threats and harassment via social media and email to actress Jodie Comer and members of her family.”

When the investigation opened, Jodie was noticeably absent from her Instagram account and did not post any photos from June 7 and July 20.

The star has since returned to the platform, sharing a photo of athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson on Tuesday ahead of her performance at the Tokyo Olympics.

The star has since also restricted comments to her posts, meaning she has control over who can leave comments on her snaps.

MailOnline has reached out to representatives for Jodie Comer for comment.

In recent weeks, Jodie has been filming the fourth and final series of Killing Eve and was spotted on the set of the show in Margate last month.

She previously said she will miss her “daring” character Villanelle for the fourth and final series of Killing Eve.

The actress, who was nominated for the Leading Actress gong for her role at the 2021 BAFTA TV Awards, discussed the hit BBC series during a Q&A chaired by Rhianna Dhillon prior to the ceremony at the time.

Talking about what she’ll miss most about playing hit man Villanelle once Killing Eve airs its fourth and final series, Jodie admitted, “Gosh, oh god, I’m like, ‘Don’t say that out loud!’ Oh God, I was just having so much fun.

“As long as there’s truth in what you’re saying, acting can be great and it can be daring and it can be in your face and it can be a little ugly and it can be all these different things, like not everything has to be super subtle.

‘I can’t think of another word, but you know what I mean? I think I just need to be a little more daring, you know. There’s no need to feel stupid about what you might want to do. I just had so much fun.

“I’ve been in such weird, funny situations and met great, great people, so yeah, I think that’s what I’ll miss the most.”
