Joaquin Phoenix has reportedly welcomed his first child with fiancé Rooney Mara, a baby boy named after his late brother River Phoenix.
Director Victor Kossakovsky spilled the beans at the Zurich Film Festival in 2020 after a screening of the film Gunda, on which Joaquin served as executive producer.
He slipped into the headlines during a weekend Q&A after being asked how he’d involved the new dad in the movie: “He’s just like a baby by the way … A beautiful son named River.”

Joaquin, 45, comes from a family of actors, including brother Rain, 47, sisters Liberty, 44, Summer, 41, and his late brother River, who tragically died of a drug overdose in October 1993, at the age of 23.
River died at the peak of his career, with memorable roles in Stand By Me (1986), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho (1991) which he already had to his credit.
Joaquin recently opened up about River’s legacy in a rare interview with Anderson Cooper before 60 minutes.
He revealed to Cooper how River showed him the movie Raging Bull, made him want to be an actor: ‘I think it just … aroused something in me. And suddenly I could see it through his eyes.
There is a role in Raging Bull where De Niro meets a girl between a fence. And he, you know, shakes her little finger and it’s just this beautiful little detail, it’s this beautiful moment. And I think in some ways that’s what I’m always looking for. ‘
He and Rooney, 35, have not officially announced the birth of their firstborn, but they have never confirmed their pregnancy.
A source said Page six in May that the couple were about six months old, shortly before she started showing off her baby bump on outings.
Rooney began dating her Her (2013) costar in late 2016, and they later starred together in Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot and Mary Magdalene, both of which premiered in 2018.
