Joaquin Phoenix looked bloody, dusty and downtrodden as he filmed new scenes for the long-awaited Joker sequel: Folie a Deux.
The 48-year-old actor was spotted on location in the Bronx on Wednesday, though he wasn’t seen with co-star Lady Gaga — who was seen kissing a passerby on set earlier this week.
The film is the follow-up to 2019’s Joker, which became the first R-rated film in history to gross over $1 billion worldwide.
Phoenix returns in the sequel as Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker, while Lady Gaga makes her DC debut as Harley Quinn.
The original movie is set in 1981 and is said to have no connection to the DC Universe, though it’s unclear what year the sequel is set.

Phoenix is seen walking the streets of the Bronx wearing a brown button-down shirt with a loose-fitting gray tie.
Some remnants of the Joker’s white-and-red makeup still show across his face, though there is a streak of fake blood on his ear and chin from some sort of ruckus.
The actor also donned a dusty gray suit coat and matching pants, completing the look with brown shoes.
Production began in December, with filming taking place in both New York City and Los Angeles.
Oddly enough, Phoenix was wearing the same dusty brown suit he was seen in while filming in downtown LA earlier this month.
His suit looks just as dusty as it did earlier this month, which could be debris/dust from an explosion of some kind, though that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
The actor was also seen with a bloody left ear during the photoshoot in Los Angeles, similar to his look at Wednesday’s photoshoot.
It’s unclear how much filming remains on the highly anticipated sequel at this time, with Todd Phillips back at the helm after directing 2019’s Joker.

The original 2019 Joker movie was a critical and commercial success, grossing $335.5 million domestically and $1.074 billion worldwide.
Phoenix also earned his first Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck, his first win after three previous nominations.
The original film was intended to be a standalone movie, with Warner Bros. DC Black, a series of darker films that are not part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
However, prior to Joker’s October 2019 release, both Phillips and Phoenix hinted about sequel possibilities.
The film opened to $96 million on its way to a $1 billion haul, from just $55 million, with a sequel green-lit shortly thereafter.
Very little is known about the sequel so far, except that it will feature Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, with Zazie Beetz’s Sophie Dumond also returning.
The sequel also stars Brendan Gleeson, Jacob Lofland, and Catherine Keener in unspecified roles.
Warner Bros. has selected The sequel is due for release on October 4, 2024, exactly five years after the original film’s release.
