“I just … I want … when he … when he … when he was 17, my brother wrote this text,” Joaquin struggled to say at the Hollywood Dolby Theater.

River won an Independent Spirit Award in 1992 for his role as narcoleptic gay fan Mike Waters in the eccentric drama My Own Private Idaho by Gus Van Sant.

“I think in almost every movie I made, there was somehow a connection with River,” Joaquin told 60 minutes on January 12, surrounded by his family.

“I think we have all felt his presence and guidance in our lives in different ways.”

Phoenix predicted that his little brother would become a much more successful actor, and he inspired his sister (and former Aleka’s bandmate Attic) Rain’s album 2019, River.

Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar Speech

I am so grateful now. I do not feel superior to my fellow nominees or anyone else in this room because we share the same love – that is the love of film. And this form of expression has given me the most extraordinary life. I don’t know what I would be without.

But I think the biggest gift it has given me, and many people in it [this industry] is the possibility to use our voice for the voiceless. I have thought about some of the distressing problems that we have had to deal with collectively. I think sometimes we feel that we are in favor of different causes. But for me I see community. I think whether we are talking about gender inequality or racism or queer rights or indigenous or animal rights, we are talking about the fight against injustice.

We are talking about fighting the belief that one nation, one people, one race, one gender, one species, has the right to dominate, use and control another with impunity.

I think we have become very detached from the natural world. Many of us are guilty of a self-centered worldview and we believe that we are the center of the universe. We go into the natural world and we plunder it for its resources. We feel the right to artificially inseminate a cow and steal her baby, even though her cries of fear are undeniable. Then we take her milk that is intended for her calf and we put it in our coffee and breakfast cereals.

We fear the idea of personal change because we think we have to sacrifice something; to give up something. But people at our best are so creative and inventive, and we can create, develop and implement change systems that are beneficial to all conscious beings and the environment.

I have been a villain all my life, I have been selfish. I have been cruel sometimes, hard to work with, and I am thankful that so many of you in this room have given me a second chance. I think that’s when we are at our best: when we support each other. Not when we cancel each other out for our past mistakes, but when we help each other grow. When we educate each other; when we guide each other towards salvation.

When he was 17, my brother [River] wrote this text. He said: “Help with love and peace.”
