Jessa Duggar reveals she suffered a miscarriage while pregnant with her fifth child

Jessa Duggar revealed that she suffered a miscarriage over the holidays, while pregnant with her fifth child.

The 19 Kids and Counting alum, 30, shared her loss in nearly 19 minutes YouTube video titled Heartbreak Over the Holidays, which documented her pregnancy journey, as well as the aftermath of the news that she had miscarried.

The star – who has been married to Ben Seewald, 27, since 2014, and who welcomed her fourth child in July 2021 – recalled the moment she found out about the miscarriage, when her sonographer told her, “The sac looks good. Not the baby.’

“Nothing could have prepared me for the weight of those words at the time,” she shared, adding, “At that point I was just in complete shock. I had no words. I just started crying right away.’

Jessa — who shares sons Spurgeon, 7, and Henry, 6, and daughters Ivy, 3, and Fern, 19 months, with Ben — recalled how the technician then left the room as she and her husband began “trying to make up for the loss.” process’. while) sit there and hold hands and cry.’

The reality TV star began the video with touching footage of her and Ben telling their kids she was pregnant.

Just a few minutes later, she gave a pregnancy update at 11 weeks, sharing that she was generally doing really well, but she felt “really sick” and had “some spotting.”

“It seems a little concerning,” she said, adding that she had an ultrasound scheduled for the next day to “see how things are going.”

She later talked about the appointment, revealing that the technician sounded concerned as soon as she looked at the baby, before telling her what happened.

“I feel like miscarriages can be so upsetting in some ways because you don’t have obvious signs that something is going wrong,” she said. “I had minimal spotting for 24 hours, and that was it.”

Due to complication risks, Jessa checked into a hospital and underwent a dilatation and curettage procedure.

She recalled the heartbreaking moments leading up to it: “The moment they drove me back (to the operating room), I just wanted to ask, like, ‘Can I please have another ultrasound? sure,” she said.

“I had all these fears that they might have something wrong… You know it’s irrational, but you just feel scared.”

The star got emotional as she discussed waking up from the procedure and recalled the “hollow feeling inside” because “the life that was inside you is no more and you never saw your baby and said goodbye.”

However, Jessa found comfort in her Christian faith, sharing, “I could thank God at that moment for giving me this life, even if we couldn’t hold this baby in our arms.”

“When you lose someone so dear to you, it makes heaven so much sweeter. We talked about that with the kids. We can’t wait to meet this little one in heaven one day,” she added.

At the end of the video, she announced on social media that she planned to “take a break” and focus on her recovery.

Rather, Jessa opted to welcome her fourth child to the hospital, as opposed to her previous three pregnancies, all of which were home births — two of which ended up sending her to hospital in an ambulance.

She had given birth to Spurgeon, Henry, and Ivy at home, but twice suffered a dangerous hemorrhage that required her to go to the hospital immediately after giving birth.

All of the mother-of-four’s home births were captured on camera for the family’s TLC series Counting On, which has since been cancelled.
