Rangers posted on Instagram: ‘Jermain Defoe has today signed a new one-year contract with Rangers and is now moving into the player/coach role.’
Speaking about his new role, an ecstatic Defoe told the club website“It is well documented how much I love the club and the relationship I have with the fans, the players and the staff of the club.
“So to get the deal done, I’m just really happy. It’s something I wanted to happen even before the season was over, especially the way we ended the season winning the league.
“It was the perfect time to be with the football club and it was so special, so to sign a player/coach contract again and still be a part of it is a great feeling for me and my family.
‘It’s something different and it’s something new for me, and first of all I want to thank the board, Ross thank [Wilson] and the manager and all the staff who made this possible.
“It’s an incredible opportunity for me and it just shows the appreciation I get from everyone at the football club, which is the best feeling in the world, more than anything, and I can imagine that once I get started, hopefully I’ll just flow into it and everything will happen very naturally.’
Defoe will team up with his former England teammate and Rangers boss Steven Gerrard
Gerrard was just as happy as Defoe: “I am absolutely delighted to retain Jermain’s services, both as a player and now as a coach.
“The relationship I have with him is well documented, having known him for so many years, and I am delighted that he will pass on his great experience and professionalism to the attacking players across the club.
“However, he has shown this season what an asset he can still be for us on the pitch, and I won’t be afraid to bring him in if need be. I’m looking forward to Jermain’s return and he will begin his new role when the preseason kicks off at the end of the month.
