Jeremy Mathieu has lifted the lid on his time as a Barcelona player, revealing that he felt extremely isolated at times, especially after a bad game.
Mathieu spent three years with trophies in Barcelona between 2014 and 2017 and won five trophies in the 2015 calendar year, including LaLiga, Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.
Despite enjoying great success, the Frenchman recalls often feeling ‘lonely’ in the bad moments without anyone being able to boost his morale after Xavi left there at the end of his first season.
Jeremy Mathieu devastated Barcelona because of the way the locker room treated him there
“At Barca, it was Xavi who spoke to you after a mistake to tell you that there was nothing wrong, that you would do better next time and things like that,” he said. RAC1
‘It is true that this is a little lacking in Barca’s locker room, you have to learn that it works like this, that you are a little lonely, but nothing happens, you have to train more than anyone else and that’s all.
‘It is not known what the dressing room looks like in Barca. I felt a little lonely in the Barca locker room, there is no one with you, to me it is not club football. ‘
Mathieu took a closer look at his experience in the Nou Camp locker room, explaining how he felt battered after a faulty showing in Barca’s 3-0 defeat to Juventus in the Champions League quarter final in the first leg.
‘Last year I had a bad time, I felt like we lost because of me in Turin, they killed me, but I understand that 11 people are playing football. But I am strong in the head, nothing happened and I started to enjoy Sporting. ‘
The former defender says he felt he was only to blame during a 3-0 defeat at Juventus in 2017
Mathieu left Barcelona for Sporting Lisbon at the end of that 2016-17 season, saying the difference in team spirit was big with Barca boss Luis Enrique suppressing him after a bad game.
‘At Sporting they came to talk to me when something happened, but at Barca nothing at all.
‘I needed a little affection. For example, if you make a serious mistake, no one will talk to you the next day, don’t feel like it. Luis Enrique, either. ‘
