Jeremy Clarkson has once again criticised Meghan Markle for her “stupid” and “unroyal” baby shower before giving birth to Archie.

The Duchess of Sussex, 43, flew to New York on a private jet to celebrate the baby shower with her A-list friends ahead of the arrival of her eldest son, Archie.

In her column for The Sunday Times, Clarkson criticised both the event and Meghan’s use of the private jet, but admitted her own past fondness for that elaborate mode of travel.

“The Duchess of Sussex has been criticised for travelling by private jet to attend her baby shower in New York. And not just because a baby shower is stupid and unroyal,” Clarkson wrote.

Meghan’s baby shower in February 2019 was criticised by the Queen’s former press secretary, Dickie Arbiter, who claimed the celebration was more of an American tradition and went against British royal practices.

Mr Arbiter told US Weekly: “Baby showers are a very American thing. Here in the UK we don’t do it.”

He added: “It was a bit over the top in terms of the spending and the way it got there. Meghan is an American and she does things the American way.”

However, it was previously revealed that Meghan was not the first royal to be the centre of attention at a baby shower, with the Princess of Wales attending the celebration years before Meghan.

Ahead of the birth of William and Kate’s eldest son George in 2013, the Princess hosted a baby shower organised by her sister Pippa Middleton, which is said to have met with the Queen’s approval.

The private jet Meghan used to travel to New York is known to have been provided courtesy of George and Amal Clooney.

The extravagant baby shower was held for the Duchess in the exclusive penthouse suite at The Marks, which has a nightly rate of £57,000.

Guests included tennis star Serena Williams, Meghan’s former ‘Suits’ colleague Abigail Spencer and human rights lawyer Amal Clooney.

Former Top Gear presenter Clarkson previously faced criticism for comments he made about Meghan in a column for The Sun in 2022.

“I hate her. Not like I hate (Scottish First Minister) Nicola Sturgeon or (English serial killer) Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level,” Clarkson wrote in the column.

In another section of the article, which has since been deleted, Clarkson referenced a famous scene from Game of Thrones, writing: “At night, I can’t sleep because I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she’s forced to parade naked through the streets of every city in Britain while crowds shout ‘Shame!’ and throw piles of excrement at her.”

Thousands of readers, a handful of political figures and even Clarkson’s daughter said she had gone too far.

Clarkson apologised to Harry and Meghan after the column, saying: “So I’m going to try and go against the grain this morning with an apology for things I said in a Sun column recently about Meghan Markle. I’m truly sorry. From the tips of my toes to the follicles on my head. This is me putting my hands up.”
