Jeopardy Champion James Holzhauer BASHES Mike Richards After Resigning As Executive Producer

Just an hour after it was announced that Mike Richards had been fired as executive producer of Jeopardy, one of the game’s most beloved champions, James Holzhauer, took the floor.

Holzhauer, 37, best known for his 32-game winning streak on Jeopardy in the summer of 2019, took to Twitter on Tuesday and indicated that Richards, 46, will not be missed.

Richards was initially announced as the new host, along with co-host Mayim Bialik, though he stepped down after controversial comments emerged from a podcast he hosted in 2013 and 2014 called The Randumb Show.

“Do I think Mike Richards’ podcast comments were appropriate for polite society? New. But did he deserve the benefit of the doubt for the work he did with Jeopardy? No, too,” Holzhauer said in a tweet, which received more than 10,000 retweets and 10,000 likes.

He also tweeted a GIF of The Wizard of Oz that read “Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead,” seemingly in reference to Richards’ firing.

Richards was the first of a slew of guest hosts to take over from the late Alex Trebek, although many were surprised when he was named the new host along with Mayim Bialyk.

A report from the bell earlier this month, he discovered comments he made on the podcast, which many found quite offensive.

During his tenure on the podcast, he called his co-host Beth Triffon a “booth s**t” for working a booth at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), while also making derogatory comments about her friends’ ” frumpy and overweight’.

The comments also came as his biased lawsuits resurfaced from his time on The Price is Right, leading to Richards stepping down as host.

“It pains me that these past incidents and comments have cast such a shadow on Jeopardy! as we look for a new chapter,” Richards said in a statement.

“As I said last week, I was very honored to be asked to host the syndicated show and excited about the opportunity to expand my role. In recent days, however, it has become clear that stepping forward as a host would be too much of a distraction for our fans and not the right move for the show. As such, I will be stepping down as host with immediate effect. As a result, we will be canceling production today,” he added.

Despite leaving his host role, Richards remained on board as executive producer of both Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, before Sony fired him on Tuesday with Variety reporting that Michael Davies (Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?) is taking over from Richards.

Richards also has a lucrative deal with Sony Pictures Television, and there are also talks about his future at the studio.

“That’s what we hoped for when Mike stepped down as host of ‘Jeopardy!’ it would have minimized the disruption and internal issues we’ve all been experiencing over the past few weeks. That clearly hasn’t happened,” said Suzanne Prete, executive vice president, business and strategy for both Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.

While Sony had previously shown their support for Richards as an EP moving forward, morale would be low on both shows, even before the hosting debacle.
