The actress, who has played Mercedes in the Channel 4 soap since 2006, takes on the challenging new storyline of battling cancer as a first-time mother following the time jump.
Jennifer has revealed that it has been difficult filming the emotional scenes as her father Colin died when she was just 15 after suffering from the disease.
Talking with The sunShe said: ‘My father died of bowel cancer when I was 15, so I lived through it with him, which is why I also wanted to do this story.
“There are people who say, ‘I can’t do that because I went through that and I don’t want to go back to that.’ I’ve never cried for my father. What we saw there is pure pain. Pure therapy and everything else.”
Jennifer said she wanted to feel “challenged” by the new story and has worked closely with Bowel Cancer UK.
She added: “I think it’s important that we don’t take the present for granted. The beauty of the leap forward – and I’m so glad they did it like this too, like the leap year – is that you see people in love a year later. They’re not in love now. You see people in perfect health, who have deteriorated. People who have had everything financially, can leave.
“It makes me feel really aware that you can’t take a year, a day for granted, and I think it will be really powerful for the audience to see that as well.”
While the next scenes are being filmed, Jennifer undergoes a transformation as Mercedes as she undergoes chemotherapy treatment and has to wear a bald cap.

In tough episodes, Mercedes will be told there is a shortage of the chemotherapy drug doctors would ideally prescribe her, putting her life at risk.
During filming, Jennifer also revealed that she got teary-eyed because she felt sad for the “women with cancer” who had lost their hair.
Last week, Hollyoaks kicked off its major new schedule change, which will see it go from five to just three episodes per week.
A one-year time jump is planned, with 20 cast members sadly made redundant due to Channel 4’s ongoing cuts.
The channel said it was making the change because it is the “optimal pattern for keeping audiences in the heart of the country engaged and attracting new ones in a highly saturated content market,” according to Channel 4 data.
They say their research shows that most regular soap opera viewers watch an average of three episodes per week.

Kate Little and Claire Poyser, managing directors of Lime Pictures, said: ‘Given the success of the new broadcast-first model, we’re delighted that Hollyoaks remains at the forefront of Channel 4’s digital-first strategy, delivering authentic, unexpected and never-before-told stories that inspire younger audiences in a way they want to consume them.
‘There are clearly implications that will mean we have to rethink the production model of Hollyoaks and, amidst the encouraging news for the future of the show and its audience, we must also recognise that a reduction in cast and crew will be very difficult and we will support everyone through that process.’
Budget cuts have forced Channel 4 bosses to carry out mass layoffs of cast and crew.
