Jennifer Lopez’s upcoming film Bob The Builder has come under fire once again after returning to the spotlight, with social media users confused as to why it is named after the original series when the plot It’s so different.
The project, in which In the Heights star Anthony Ramos will take on the lead character, re-entered the public consciousness on Monday after Deadline reported that Amazon MGM Studios had won the bidding war for the rights.
In the film, Roberto (Ramos), aka Bob, travels to Puerto Rico to do important construction work, addressing the issues affecting the island and delving into what it means to build.
Bob’s journey celebrates the vibrant and colorful textures of the Latin Caribbean nations and their people.
The original Bob the Builder series was a British animated children’s television program created by Keith Chapman.

His next animation will see Roberto (Ramos), also known as Bob, travel to Puerto Rico for an important construction job.
It ran from April 12, 1999 to December 31, 2011 in the United Kingdom on the CBBC network and later CBeebies.
The show focuses on the adventures and escapades of a general contractor named Bob, owner of a team of anthropomorphized construction vehicles dedicated to helping the residents of Bobsville.
They are also joined by their co-worker Wendy, along with their neighbors and friends.
Bob the Builder made the slogan famous: ‘Can we fix it? Yes, we can!’ – and the character even scored a Christmas number one single in the UK in 2000.
Social media users have been perplexed by JLo’s film because it is so far from the original, and many are also confused as to why the creators are making such a “deep” children’s film.
On social media site X, one wrote: ‘So that’s not Bob the Builder?????’
Another said of the plot: ‘What does that mean?’
“It’s cool how completely absurd Hollywood is sometimes because (fuck!) you mean Amazon is making a movie about Bob (called Roberto in this movie), The Builder, who goes on a journey to really discover what it means? ..build,” posted a third.

A fourth continued: ‘I remember growing up watching Bob the Builder. The show was about building things with talking construction equipment, helping to teach kids how you can trust your friends to help you when you need it.
‘How did we get here?’
A fifth continued: “I really don’t understand this.”
“This is a kids cartoon there was no need for an origin story lol he’s Bob the Builder,” said a sixth.
Others wrote: ‘Since when do children’s movies need to be so deep?’
Another said: “It’s amazing how much depth of plot they’re going for with the Bob the Builder story.”
The animated film was first announced in January when it was revealed that JLo’s production company, Nuyorican Productions, had joined forces with Anthony for the new film.
It was previously confirmed that JLo, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina of Nuyorican Productions will co-produce the Mattel Films project.
Felipe Vargas will write the upcoming film, with the project overseen by Kevin McKeon, Ivan Sanchez and Arturo Thur De Koós for Mattel and Natalie Haack Flores for Nuyorican.
The film found itself at the center of an unlikely culture war at the time of its announcement, with Frank Furedi, emeritus professor of sociology at the University of Kent, criticizing the decision to make Bob a social justice warrior.
