Brendan Rodgers urged to apologize for allegedly sexist comment to journalist

Jeff Stelling appeared shocked after listening to Brendan Rodgers’ controversial post-match interview with a BBC reporter on Sunday.

Celtic boss Rodgers has come under fire from women’s groups after labeling experienced broadcaster Jane Lewis a “nice girl” before ending the interview.

Activists from For Women Scotland have accused Rodgers of “casual sexism”, while another group described him as a “dinosaur”.

Rodgers has been urged to apologize for the terse exchange that took place on the Sportsound program after Celtic beat Motherwell 3-1 at Fir Park.

Stelling was left horrified when the interview aired during his talkSPORT breakfast show.

‘Good girl, good girl?’ he said. —My God, Brendan. What does it mean?’

Lewis, 53, had asked Rodgers to expand on a point after being told that “history has already been written about this group” in the context of the league title race.

When asked to elaborate, Rodgers, 51, seemed unhappy with the journalist’s line of questioning, saying: “No, no. You know exactly what I mean.

Lewis again pressed Rodgers to follow up, only for him to appear to end the interview. He was then heard to say: “Done, good girl, well done.”

Lewis, a broadcaster with decades of experience, is believed to be unfazed. He has yet to comment on the matter or post a response on his X account.

However, the Scottish Feminist Network has attacked Rodgers.

“Jane Lewis was simply doing her job, trying to get an explanation from Brendan Rodgers about her cryptic comment,” the group said.

“That the preferred attitude was condescension is quite illuminating, but really very depressing in 2024. We thought dinosaurs were extinct.”

For Women Scotland campaigners believe Rodgers should apologise.

A spokeswoman said: “It is depressing that casual sexism is still entrenched in sport. Women’s achievements are undervalued and dismissed and their professional status is undermined. “Rodgers owes the journalist an apology.
