A new report revealed that Jason Momoa wrote a 50-page copy of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but it appears the studio had other plans for the upcoming DC movie.
Momoa previously told Variety He co-wrote the first story version of Aquaman 2, and it was going to focus heavily on the climate change crisis. The film will see Aquaman as an environmental activist, a shift Momoa believed would be especially powerful in today’s culture.
“The beautiful thing[about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom]is that my partner and I wrote the first version of it and it was 50 pages long, and a good chunk of it involved me talking to the UN about what’s going on with the melting ice caps. There’s no galaxy,” Momoa told Variety. “A distant aliens are coming to destroy us. We are destroying our planet. We need to act together and save our home.”
But despite Momoa’s passion for his version, Warner Bros. seems to have different ideas. In a new interview with Magazine Men’s HealthMomoa revealed that his version was shelved during production. To his chagrin, the actor said Warner Bros., which owns DC Studios, bought his copy but didn’t follow through in full.
Momoa’s feelings about Aquaman are pretty mixed, and he’s clearly feeling a little conflicted about how the character is treated in DC.
He told Men’s Health: “It’s not that I don’t care about Aquaman, he’s an amazing character. Aquaman is probably the toughest character in comics history. He’s been mocked and mocked, but I’ve tried to give him heart and soul, and in some ways I’m proud of that. Do I feel By pressing for a success (Part Two)? No, all I can do is give my all. But it’s in the hands of a lot of other people.”
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, set for release on December 25, may be the last time fans will see Momoa as the King of the Seas. The future of DC now lies in the hands of new DC Studios chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it’s unclear if Momoa will return in his role.
Momoa hinted this past January that he’ll have a role in the new DC universe. As the star held a private meeting with Warner and DC executives, he excitedly said he had some “very good news” to share. Even if Momoa has a place in the new Gun and Safran universe, we still don’t know exactly what that role will look like. Either way, Momoa insists that Aquaman will be part of DC’s future.
