Jason Momoa is officially switching gears within the DC Universe after playing fan favorite Aquaman for eight years.
On Monday, the 45-year-old actor stepped out instagram to reveal that he has turned the page to playing a superhero and is trying his luck as the villain Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow.
In 2023, fans speculated that the Hawaiian star could be a candidate for the role. At the time, Momoa said he had not been approached to play Lobo, but he gladly accepted an invitation to audition.
‘Lobo was always my favorite. What if they call me and ask me to play it? “It’s fucking yes,” he said. fandango At the moment. ‘But I haven’t received that call. Therefore, I don’t want to spread any fake news.”
Now, in a moment of coming full circle, he shared the same quote from 2023 and simply wrote in the caption: “They called.”
He is scheduled to star alongside Milly Alcock, who plays the title character. Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow will hit theaters on June 26, 2026.

Superman director and DC CEO James Gunn took to the comments section to congratulate the six-foot-four actor on his return to the DC franchise: “Welcome, my friend.”
Lobo, which in Spanish means ‘Wolf’, first appeared in the comic Omega Men #3 in June 1983. The character was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen.
According to one fan’s description, Lobo is “an intergalactic bounty hunter, the last Czarnian.” Known for his colorful speech and rapid regeneration, he has been more of a nuisance than a threat.
Monday’s announcement marks a major change for Momoa, who previously headlined the DC Aquaman films.
The Aquaman franchise is considered over with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023. And Momoa seemingly confirms that the future of more films in the beloved franchise is “not looking good.”
“I love this character and (would like to) play him for a long time,” he told ET in December 2023.
Although he would be willing to continue playing the aquatic superhero, he thinks: “Right now I’m thinking, ‘That doesn’t look very good.’
And the actor also announced that he was interested in continuing to star in the DCU, but in different roles.

Momoa is currently filming a Minecraft movie in New Zealand alongside comedian Jack Black; The first official trailer for the film was recently released after the trailer received mixed reviews.
The long-awaited films will offer a comprehensive look at the world of the popular video game.
A Minecraft movie will be released in theaters in international markets on April 2, 2025 and in North America on April 4, 2025.
